Humanismo y genio crítico en Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo.

Abstract

El artículo es una reflexión sobre el genio crítico de Menéndez Pelayo, el primer historiador y crítico moderno de la literatura española, pero también un autor de lección permanente, a pesar del olvido en que parece tenerlo la reciente cultura española. Se subraya la inequívoca tradición humanista en la que asienta sus principios y se comentan sus logros críticos, que —más allá de su reconocida valía como erudito— obedecen a su sensibilidad estética, así como a la emoción auténtica y al magnífico estilo con que se transmiten.

This essay is a reflection on the critical genius of Menéndez Pelayo, who was the first modern historian and critic of Spanish literature and, despite the lack of acknowledgement of his work in present Spanish culture, an author of undying value. The study points out that he clearly belongs to the humanist tradition and reviews some of his critical achievements, discussing not only his recognized erudition but also the sensibility and strong emotion with which his knowledge is passed on and the elegant literary style he employs.
