Onomatopeya, delocutividad y fonosimbolismo en la Ornitonimia Latinoamericana.

Abstract

Hay un pájaro muy extendido en América central y del Sur que recibe diversos nombres, según el país y la región, basados en interpretaciones lingüísticas de su canto característico. Este pájaro es denominado benteveo, bienteví, cristofué, bichofué, bichofeo, pitojuán entre otras muchas expresiones sugeridas por los sonidos que emite dicha ave. Estos ornitónimos se han denominado delocutivos para señalar que se utilizan expresiones lingüísticas para imitar su canto. En este artículo vamos a analizar este fenómeno y lo vamos a relacionar con el de los ornitónimos puramente onomatopéyicos. Vamos a ver que ambos tipos están íntimamente relacionados y que ello supone un acercamiento al estudio de la onomatopeya basado en los principios generales del simbolismo fónico y no en la mera imitación sonora que aparece en la definición tradicional de este fenómeno.

There is a commonly-found bird in Central and South America that receives different names depending on the country and the region. Most of these names (benteveo, bienteví, cristofué, bichofué, bichofeo, pitojuán) are based on a meaningful interpretation of its characteristic song. These ornithonyms have been characterized as delocutive in order to highlight the fact that they derive from expressions of a natural language that seem to sound similar to the sounds made by these birds. In this paper, I will analyse this phenomenon and explore its relations with purely onomatopoeic ornithonyms. I will show that both types of ornithonyms are intimately related and that this suggests a new approach to the study of onomatopoeia based on sound–symbolic principles and not on pure sound imitation, as stated in its traditional definition.
