Abstract

El presente trabajo ahonda en la posible intersección entre emblemática y brujería, se centra en explorar si la marca diabólica que se creía que portaban los brujos y brujas se podría considerar un emblema. A priori, este sello demoníaco casa muy bien con el concepto de emblema y parece cumplir todos los presupuestos atribuibles al mismo. Sin embargo, a lo largo de este artículo veremos si esa posible relación (emblemática-brujería) es viable, pues esta huella en la piel está caracterizada por la vaguedad y la indefinición, como se puede observar en los textos de los siglos XVI y XVII que se han detenido en este elemento de la brujería; no presenta una forma fija ni se ubica en una parte determinada del cuerpo, por lo que su reconocimiento es difícil y solo «posible» porque se la supone insensible y no sangrante.

The present work delves into the possible intersection between emblems and witchcraft, exploring whether the diabolical mark believed to be on the witches and warlocks’ skin could be considered an emblem. At first sight, this demonic seal is very close to the concept of emblem and seems to fulfill all the presuppositions attributable to it. However, throughout this article we will see if that possible relationship (emblems-witchcraft) is possible, because this imprint is characterized by vagueness and a lack of definition, as it can be noticed in texts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that stop at this element of witchcraft: it neither shows a fixed form nor is located in a given part of the body, so its recognition is difficult and only «possible» because it is supposed to be insensitive and non-bleeding.
