The Roman New Year deity Anna Perenna comes across as misty and elusive as to her origins and position within the Roman pantheon. We explore the data the classical documentation gives us about her in order to establish the most outstanding facets of the goddess. Based on them — and focusing especially on her role as Mater Nutrix — we com-pare her with other deities and assimilable mythical figures. We conclude an archaic origin, probably paleolithic, for the original nurturing goddess, who would be fossilized in folklore or reinvented in the form of divinities such as Anna Perenna.en
