La asistencia sanitaria en la provincia de Valencia durante la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939)

Abstract

La incapacidad del Gobierno de la República para hacer frente a la situación creada tras el fracaso de la sublevación militar del 18 de julio de 1936 en la ciudad y en la provincia de Valencia hizo que los sindicatos tomaran la iniciativa. En el caso de la ciudad de Valencia y en materia sanitaria esta respuesta consistió en la creación del Comité Sanitario Popular, un organismo revolucionario que se encargó de coordinar la respuesta sanitaria de los diferentes hospitales de sangre que se fundaron por toda la ciudad y provincia de Valencia. Los hospitales de sangre eran centros sanitarios que surgieron para acoger a los heridos y enfermos procedentes de los frentes de guerra. Este artículo analiza la estructura y la diferente evolución que experimentaron estas instalaciones sanitarias a medida que avanzaba la guerra. Así, algunos hospitales desaparecieron, otros evolucionaron hacia centros sanitarios de características diferentes y otros fueron militarizados en virtud de la Orden del Ministerio de la Guerra de 23 de enero de 1937.

The inability of the Government of the Republic to deal with the situation created after the failure of the military uprising of 18 July 1936 in the city and the province of Valencia made the syndicates to take the initiative. In the case of the city of Valencia the response was the creation of the People’s Health Committee, a revolutionary organism responsible for coordination of several war hospitals established throughout the city and Valencia province. War hospitals were health centers created to accommodate the wounded and sick coming directly from the war fronts. This article analyzes the structure and the different evolution of these health centers during the war. Thus, some hospitals disappeared, others evolved as different health centers and other were militarized under the Order of the Ministry of War of January 23, 1937.
